A crash and fire have closed Interstate 70 and U.S. 6 east of Eagle.
The Colorado Department of Transportation reported the crash on U.S. 6 at 1:25 p.m., then added the Interstate 70 closures at 1:37 p.m. Traffic is closed in both directions on both roadways.
Two detours are in place for drivers to avoid the area. One is from the Rifle exit of Interstate 70 north onto Colo. 13 through Craig, over to Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40, then south on Colo. 131 and back to Interstate 70 in Wolcott.
The other is from the Glenwood Springs exit of Interstate 70 south on Colo. 82 to U.S. 24 near Granite, then north on U.S. 24 back onto Interstate 70 near Minturn.
A person who answered the phone at the Greater Eagle County Fire Protection District confirmed there is a fire in the area that has caused the closure, but she is not sure how the fire started. The size of the fire also is not clear. Smoke can be seen in the area on CDOT traffic cameras.
“Looks like it could be an extended closure,” she said, judging by the fire. “But that’s all we know right now.”
