The Tories have had their fair share of leadership turmoil in recent years, which Rishi Sunak sought to bring to an end. However, the gloomy polls – alongside the outbreak of various dramas in Westminster – make it look likely that the Tories will end up fighting for the leadership all over again after the election.
Many of those who stood for the top job last time remain prominent figures in the party, such as Suella Braverman, James Cleverly, Kemi Badenoch, Penny Mordaunt and Tom Tugendhat.
They are warmly received by Conservative members, leaving them well-placed to go for the position should it be vacated by Rishi Sunak.
Others on the backbenches like Jacob Rees-Mogg remain hugely popular with the Conservative grassroots.
We may be as long as a year away from the next election. But that won’t stop the party’s leading lights from jockeying for position.
