Yoga teacher murdered lodger after becoming increasingly intolerant of him

A yoga teacher who murdered her lodger because she was becoming "increasingly intolerant" of him was jailed for life today (Friday, December 2).

Landlady Dawn Lewis, 54, stabbed Glenn Richards, 61, at her cottage in Glastonbury, Somerset, on April 18 this year.

She was told she would serve a minimum of 20 years behind bars.

The court heard how she wanted to evict Richards, who it emerged had killed his wife in front of his two kids in 2001.

Richards moved in with Lewis in August last year, having moved to Glastonbury after being released from prison in 2011.

The court heard how the pair would often argue and he would complain about her noise.

In what the judge described as a "savage attack", Richards suffered five large stab wounds, two of which were "not survivable".

Lewis claimed she acted in self-defence and suffered three cuts to her thigh.

She said that she started carrying a knife as she grew concerned about his behaviour, claiming that he was speaking "in a different manner" about the killing of his wife.

However, a doctor told the court her injuries "did not appear to fit the description of the attack" and seemed "self-inflicted".

Lewis' 999 call was played to the jury. In it she said: "I went to the door, he stabbed me in the leg , I took the knife off him, I stabbed him.

"He fell down the stairs – I stabbed him again, as he was trying to take the knife of me. and I called you."

The jury also saw footage of the moment she was pinned to the floor and arrested.

Sentencing at Bristol Crown Court today, judge His Honour William Hart said Lewis tried to cover up the murder by playing on her fear she could have been another victim.

Instead, the judge said she had grown "increasingly intolerant" of him.

He said: "Glenn Richards was jailed for life for stabbing to death Karen Richards on 7 May 2001 in front of their two young sons – Jamie and Daniel.

"He was forever marked by the burden of guilt for what he had done – and rightly so – but he was genuinely contrite.

"You decided Glenn Richards had to be removed from your life. You premeditated his killing and how you might get away with it.

"Your actions were attributed to anger rather than terror. You armed yourself with a knife, went upstairs, forced entry and he was repeatedly stabbed by you.

"You then inflicted minor incise wounds to your thigh to make it look like you were the victim. The disparity between his wounds and yours were telling."
