Speaking from the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Thursday, Conservative MP Tobias Ellwood told Sky News the West may have left it “too late” to intervene in Ukraine as Russia have reached out to China in bolstering its aggression on the world stage. In a chilling warning, he stressed how Ukraine is part of a “bigger picture” of the balance of world power and stressed Britain must realise the significance of a potential invasion and the fight against authoritarianism.

Figures suggest that a combined Russian and Chinese army of regular and paramilitary soldiers could see the deployment of well over 8.7 million troops.

Mr Ellwood told Sky News: “The penny is dropping, Ukraine is at the epicentre of the clash between western liberalism and authoritarian

“There is a much bigger picture at play, which I think the West is now beginning to appreciate, and if we blink where could this take us?”

He added: “It is too late to bring in a NATO division, but the west needs to ask themselves what more can we do?”

He suggested a “no-fly zone” in Ukraine and called for increased defence spending in response.

But in a chilling observation, he said the West faces a major crisis in the face of a “bigger alliance” between Russia and China.

He said: “It is this bigger alliance between Russia and China, it is through the prism that we need to look at events in Ukraine.”

But Mr Ellwood went on to say it is “far too late” for western military action in Ukraine which he said he was calling for “months ago”.

He also claimed how “we need to take the British people with us” in understanding the significance of a Russia and China alliance in Ukraine adding that more Western boots on the ground would not start a war, but in fact prevent one.

He said: “NATO is all about European security and Ukraine is part of Europe.

“The consequences of not doing anything and allowing that invasion to take place will have massive implications for the UK economy.”

And in a stern warning, he added: “But there is a bigger picture at play about where Russia is going, its alliance with China is a turning point on our security on the international stage.”

He also added how “privately” the international community are “regretting not stepping forward” in preventing the onward march of a Russian and Chinese military union.

Despite this, Mr Ellwood insisted there was still time to act and prevent catastrophe with a no-fly zone as well as a possible alliance between Britain, Ukraine, and Poland.

But he warned: “If we do nothing and allow an invasion to take place, it will have a totemic affect on European security. This is a serious moment and we are being tested.”

Up to an estimated 200,000 Russian troops and military hardware have surrounded Ukraine amid fears of an imminent invasion of Ukraine, and though President Vladimir Putin has been seen to alegedly pull troops back from the frontline, many fear this has been diversion tactics.
