Piers Morgan has heavily criticised President Donald Trump in recent months over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the resultant economic downturn and his response to the death of George Floyd. But in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk the GMB presenter said a Trump victory in the November Presidential election would be the best outcome for the UK.

Mr Morgan, who says he has been friends with Mr Trump for 13 years, told this website the US President views the UK very favourably.

The journalist also revealed he believes a Trump victory would be better for the UK than a win by Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

When discussing a Trump victory, he said: “I think it would be quite good for a UK trade deal.

“I think we would probably be better off in that regards than if Biden wins.

“In that sense I would think from Brexit and our trading relationship with the Americans a Trump win would be better.”

Mr Morgan added he believed a Biden victory could turn out to be rather “tricky” for Boris Johnson, as the Democrat is likely to favour the EU over Britain.

He said: “It’s going to be tricky because Joe Biden has been pro-European, and I think he will be more supportive of the European Union.

“Plus Boris has been quite critical of the Democrats and of Biden, which would make life a little bit more difficult for him.”

JUST IN: Joe Biden’s election hopes dashed in dire warning: ‘He can’t win!’

But he doesn’t think having Biden as President will be completely unworkable.

The journalist said: “I think Boris will be able to work with Joe Biden.

“Biden is a very canny, experienced operator who won’t want to have anything but a good relationship with this country.

“But in terms of the European Union I expect he may favour them over us.”

When quizzed on the chances of Trump being re-elected on November 3, Mr Morgan said he believed the President was “heading for a loss”.

He conceded that anything can happen in the final three weeks, but he believes the tide is turning against Trump.

Mr Morgan said his handling of the coronavirus crisis and his response to the killing of George Floyd has acted as a “double whammy”.

He said: “I think the combination of that has really dented people’s trust in him in America and I think he is going to pay a price for it in the ballot box.”

Mr Morgan has heavily criticised President Trump in recent weeks and didn’t hold back in his new book ‘Wake Up’.

In the book, which takes the reader through the first half of 2020, he described the President as an “utter disgrace” and having “completely lost control” of the USA.

He said: “The country desperately needs proper leadership, of the type that heals not divides.”

‘Wake Up: Why the world has gone nuts’ by Piers Morgan (HarperCollins, £20) is out on October 15.
