Trapeze artist falls to her death after husband tragically fails to catch her

A trapeze artist fell more than 30ft to her death during an acrobatics show gone wrong as horrified audience members watched on.

Sun Moumou, 37, tumbled to the hard stage during a show in Suzhou, China, on Saturday (April 15) after her husband, who was performing the risky routine with her, failed to catch her with his legs.

In footage of the horrific incident shared online, spectators at the show could be heard screaming as Sun fell from a height of around 32ft.

Local news reports said Sun was rushed to hospital but medics were unable to save her life and she quickly succumbed to her injuries.

Her heartbroken husband Zhang Moumou said: “We were always happy together.

“As I am in the middle of the process of dealing with all of this, I can't disclose any specific details at this time.”

It is understood the couple also have a son and daughter together.

A colleague added the acrobat was still breathing "weakly" immediately after the tragic fall.

The performance was put to a stop immediately and additional planned shows over the rest of the weekend were cancelled.

Meanwhile local officials were quick to share their “deep condolences” and sympathy for the victim’s family and online critics said the industry should be subjected to stricter regulations.

The Global Times reported Anhui Yaxi Performing Art Media has been fined more than £5,600 for “holding commercial performances without approval”.

Authorities have also launched an investigation into how Sun performed without the proper safety precautions.

The performance reportedly took place at a local family farm in Hougao, a village in Suzhou, in the east of Anhui Province.

Sun and her husband Zhang had reportedly worked together for many years and often performed without safety belts.

However, Zhang insisted his wife had not “refused” to wear a safety line during the ill-fated performance over the weekend.
