A Tesco had to be evacuated after a distressed man "poured petrol on himself" inside the store.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing customers at the Meir Park supermarket off Lysander Road, Stoke-on-Trent, being evacuated from the store as the man doused himself with petrol.
Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly before 8pm on Tuesday, August 11.
The incident was brought to a safe conclusion with the man being detained by police officers before he was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital for further treatment.
One witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Tesco in Meir evacuated due to a member of the public entering the store and pouring petrol over themselves. All emergency services on site."
A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a man in distress at Tesco in Meir Park shortly before 8pm on Tuesday, August 11.
"A vulnerable male was detained and has been taken to hospital."
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to the Tesco store in Meir, Stoke at 7.45pm on Tuesday evening to reports of a man who was distressed.
"An ambulance attended the scene along with police and fire crews. The man was assessed and treated at the scene by the ambulance crew before being taken to hospital for further treatment."
A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed firefighters attended the scene.
