Prince Charles could "decommission" Kensington Palace when he becomes King following reports that the property for Harry and Meghan remains empty, as speculation grows.
The luxurious 21-room apartment, which has undergone a multi-million-pound transformation, still has no one residing in apartment one.
It has been three years since the refit was complete yet the property is still empty, which has sparked speculation as to whether there is disinterest in the building.
The apartment was earmarked for Harry and Meghan to live next to the Cambridge's who moved into 1A in 2017, following a different refurbishment which totalled a staggering £12 million.
But the Sussexes are now residing in California and it is unlikely that they will return to the UK, following "Megxit" earlier this year.
It has been reported that William and Kate allegedly have long-term plans to relocate to Windsor which leaves the future of the building unknown.
A source told the Daily Mail: "Charles is always talking about a slimmed-down monarchy. They could sell off the rest on long leases and generate some income. They could even flog it to a Saudi!"
It has been reported that the building has housed members of the Royal family for more than 300 years and has an estimated value of £620 million.

Another source told the Daily Mail that apartment 1 is in "great condition" and it would be "wise" for Prince Charles to get a market rate for it.
The Kents recently started paying £120,000 a year rent after it was reported that they had been charged a mere £69 a month for their lavish Apartment 10 by the Queen.
Historian Christopher Warwick said: "Whispers that Kensington Palace's days as an official residence are numbered are a pointer to how many changes we are going to see when Charles becomes King.
"He would be wise to rent it out and hold it in reserve should he need to accommodate any Royals down the line."
It is believed that the rest of Kensington Palace is full and work on the building is "ongoing".
