Princess Charlotte and the gift that eased tensions between Meghan and Kate

Princess Charlotte helped bring Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle closer together after the two had a strained relationship from the start, according to a biography.

Kate and Meghan reportedly did not see eye-to-eye from the beginning as revealed in the biography Finding Freedom by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand.

However, it was Charlotte who helped the two bond while Meghan was living round the corner from Prince William, Kate and the children.

The book says that Kate is an "extremely guarded person" with a tight group of friends so it was difficult for Meghan to get to know her.

Prince Harry first introduced Meghan to his brother and Kate at Kensington Palace just a few months into their relationship.

Meghan and Kate reportedly never had a falling out but were never close due to them having different personalities.

However, the book revealed it was Kate’s daughter Charlotte that helped the two come together.

Meghan's "adoration" of Charlotte is said to have really helped them get on when the Duchess of Sussex lived with Harry at his Kensington Palace home of Nottingham Cottage.

The property is just around the corner from Kate and William and allowed the Sussexes to see Charlotte and her brothers George and Louis.

The book also revealed that Meghan bought Kate a thoughtful gift of a soft leather Smythson notebook, which reportedly went down well and made them closer.

This is before Harry and Meghan left for their roles in the Royal Family to live in the US.

Their decision to leave the UK reportedly caused the tension to return between Meghan and Kate.

Mr Scobie claimed that Kate "barely acknowledged" Meghan in the last meeting before they left to start their new life in California.

He told the Times: "Although Meghan tried to make eye contact with Kate, the duchess barely acknowledged her.

"To purposefully snub your sister-in-law… I don't think it left a great taste in the couple's mouths."
