Prince Charles visited Prince Philip due to ‘longer than expected’ hospital stay

Prince Philip is on course to spend his seventh night in hospital following his admittance last Tuesday evening as a precaution after he fell unwell.

The 99-year-old is currently under the care of the staff at King Edward VII's hospital. On Saturday, he received a visit from his eldest son Prince Charles.

Charles made the 200 mile round trip from Highgrove, Gloucestershire to the capital to provide his elderly father with some company – the first member of the Royal Family to be able to do so since Philip was first sent for hospital treatment last week.

It's thought that the future king decided to visit his father due to Philip's hospital stay lasting longer than first expected. Prince Charles was not believed to have seen Philip since before Christmas, due to the lockdown.

Charles was pictured entering the hospital looking visibly emotional on Saturday afternoon.

Last Thursday brought the news that Prince Philip is likely to remain in hospital well into this week "for observation".

A royal source revealed: "Following consultation with his doctor the Duke of Edinburgh is likely to remain in hospital for observation and rest over the weekend and into next week.

"As we have said previously the doctor is acting with an abundance of caution. The Duke remains in good spirits."

This was followed by an official statement released by Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, which read: "The Duke’s admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of His Royal Highness’s Doctor, after feeling unwell. The Duke is expected to remain in hospital for a few days of observation and rest."

According to HELLO!, Prince Philip walked unaided into hospital and is thought to be in "good spirits" following the non-emergency admission.

The stint in hospital is entirely precautionary and Philip's ill-feeling is thought to be not related to COVID-19 at all.

Throughout Philip's time in the London-based hospital, the Queen has remained at Windsor Castle where she has spent the majority of lockdown with her husband.
