A police officer has been knocked unconscious and assaulted in a sickening attack in London.

The Met Police officer is alleged to have been attacked in Hackney, in the east of the capital, with one person being arrested.

A tweet sent out by BCU Commander Marcus Barnett was posted on the Hackney Police Twitter account following the attack.

It said: “One of my officers was knocked unconscious and assaulted last night – while simply protecting the public. Absolutely disgraceful and the person arrested can and should expect the full weight of justice system to fall on them.

“Your police officers are assaulted too often.

“This is unacceptable and what you must understand is officers are just ordinary men and women, like you – who simply chose to serve and in doing so do extraordinary things."

He added: “Could you? Would you?”

It comes as figures revealed that attacks on Met Police officers dramatically rose during the coronavirus lockdown.

The stats, obtained by the BBC, showed 2,027 assaults had happened on officers between May and July, which is a 38& increase compared with last year.
