Peter Tobin was my husband and Im glad the monster is now dead, says ex-wife

The ex-wife of serial killer Peter Tobin has labelled him a "monster" and admitted she is relieved he is now dead.

But Cathy Wilson, 52, has also expressed her sympathy for the families of potential victims that her former husband, who once boasted of killing up to 48 women, did not confess to murdering as detectives interviewed him on his death bed.

Tobin, 76, died at Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary early on Saturday morning (October 8) after suffering from a series of health issues, including a broken hip that he sustained in a recent fall.

She told the Sunday Mirror: "He was a monster and there is a feeling of relief that he is now dead.

But the strongest emotion we have is grief for the families of girls and young women who disappeared and know Tobin was the likely culprit, but who have to accept now that they will never have the answers they wanted so badly. The thing he most enjoyed was having power and total control."

Tobin was given a life sentence for raping and murdering Polish student Angelika Kluk, 23, and hiding her body under the floor of a Glasgow church in 2006.

He was also serving life terms for the 1991 murders of Vicky Hamilton, 15, and Dinah McNicol, 18.

Their bodies were found 17 years later, buried in the garden of his former home in Margate, Kent.

Other possible victims include Louise Kay, 18, who vanished in 1988 from Polegate, East Sussex, when Tobin was working nearby, and Jessie Earl, 22, who vanished in 1980.

Her skeletal remains were found nine years later at Beachy Head, an area Tobin knew well.

Cathy met Tobin when she was 16 and living in Brighton with her grandparents in the mid-1980s.

He was nearly 40 and had been married twice, but within three weeks, he had persuaded her to move in with him.

His behaviour however turned violent when she fell pregnant with their son Daniel, who is now 34.

She recalled: "Throwing his dinner at me and putting his hands around my throat became routine. I was his slave.

"Even when I went into labour, he refused to take me to hospital until I had cooked a roast dinner for him and some friends. I was scared to cross him and felt completely tied.”

After Daniel was born, Tobin moved them to West Lothian, Scotland – where Vicky was murdered – and Cathy says she was made to watch him have "brutal" sex with prostitutes.

By 1992, Tobin was taking their son to Margate, letting him play in a sandpit in the garden, where it would later emerge he had hidden two bodies.

Cathy and Daniel were finally freed from Tobin’s clutches when he was jailed for raping two girls of 14 and 15 at knifepoint and leaving them for dead in 1993.

Former detective David Swindle, who led the investigation into Tobin, said: "There’s no doubt in my mind he’s responsible for many more murders, but he’s taken his secrets to the grave."
