At least five people have been killed after a helicopter crashed in the Mount Everest area of Nepal this morning (July 11).

The aircraft, carrying five tourists and the pilot, had been flying on a sightseeing tour of the world's highest peak when it vanished.

It was returning to the capital of Kathmandu when contact was lost.

Airport official Sagar Kadel believes that weather conditions had forced the pilot to make changes to the helicopter’s planned flight route.

Adding tourist flights to the mountains are less common this time of year as visibility is poor and weather conditions become unpredictable.

A major search and rescue effort was launched, with helicopter teams searching from the skies, while police search on foot.

Much of the mountainous area is only accessible on foot and can’t be reached by road, according to AP News.
