Terrifying video has emerged on social media showing a mob of thugs throwing kicks and punches to a defenceless woman in the street.

The group is filmed as it ganged up on a 19-year-old victim as they launched a merciless attack.

Video shared on Twitter shows how the "crazy" scenes unfolded in Portland Road, South Norwood, Croydon on Saturday (August 27).

A loud commotion can be heard as men and women shout over each other while the victim is laying down on the street, cowering in pain.

A man is seen shielding her from above and some women are desperately pulling the thugs away in a bid to stop the attack.

"My high street last night… crazy behaviour, what is happening?" the video caption wrote.

Met Police confirmed the incident and said the 19-year-old victim was taken to hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries.

But the cause of the fight remains unclear

One eyewitness, who works at Yogi Newsagents, told MyLondon: "Around 10 or 15 of them came inside and were stealing sweets, stealing alcohol, trying to get into the back.

"There were hundreds outside.

"We tried to force them out and put the shutters down and they started breaking things, smashing the doors and windows.

"They're broken now so it's a lot of damage and we don't know when it will be fixed.

"It was about 15 or 20 minutes until the police arrived and they ran off."
