Mexican state security chief and four others die in tragic helicopter crash

A Mexican state security chief was among five people killed in a helicopter crash.

Porfirio Sánchez Mendoza, the security chief for the state of Aguascalientes, lost his life along with the helicopter's pilot, captain and two gunners, according to the state governor Teresa Jimenez.

In front of assembled members of the media during a press conference on Thursday (November 17), Jimenez offered her condolences to the families of the bereaved, saying: "We deeply regret the death of these five men."

The Eagle 1 helicopter belonged to Aguascalientes state’s secretariat of public security and Jimenez went on to confirm that an investigation into the cause of the crash had already started.

But she also added that "everything indicates" that it was an accident and stated that she would be able to share further details once the investigation has been completed.

The heroic actions of the pilot were also lauded with the helicopter crash-landing in an empty lot away from populated areas.

Photographs taken at the scene of the incident showed the smouldering remains of the helicopter with police cars in attendance.

It comes just four months after another horror helicopter crash in Mexico killed 14 people who were assisting with the military operation that captured notorious 69-year-old drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero.

The Blackhawk helicopter crashed near the city of Los Mochis in the state of Sinaloa during the operation – leaving only one survivor.

It was reported that the helicopter suffered an "accident" – with no cause for the crash determined at the time.

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador paid tribute to the crash victims on Twitter and confirmed in his post that "the crew were about to land in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, after fulfilling the mission of supporting those who executed the arrest warrant against Rafael Caro Quintero".
