The First Lady posted a selection of images on social media showing off some of the Christmas decorations adorning the White House this year. But social media users were divided on the new layout, with Twitter users pointing out that Americans are using food banks amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In a short post on Twitter, Mrs Trump showed off the decorations themed on “America the Beautiful”.
She said, announcing the decorations: “During this special time of the year, I am delighted to share “America the Beautiful” and pay tribute to the majesty of our great Nation.
“Together, we celebrate this land we are all proud to call home.”
The First Lady traditionally handles the design of the White House for Christmas, with 2017 seeing Mrs Trump’s Christmas decorations take 1,600 hours to set up.
Mr Trump’s administration has not revealed the cost of any of the First Lady’s Christmas decorations, but former President Barack Obama’s administration spent an average of $1 million each year on festive decor according to ABC.
Twitter users took note of the lavish decorations and blasted Mrs Trump for showing off the White House amid the coronavirus pandemic.
One user said: “We are struggling, seriously, don’t even want to put up lights because can’t pay the electric bill.
“Should the White House be conservative and spread the money to the less fortunate?
Another added: “Nice to be you ‘decorating’ without a budget while A LOT of people are struggling to put food on the table.
“Tons of people on unemployment which has ended or about to end yet there you are, as fresh as can be without a worry in the world.”
Other Twitter users were more brutal about the First Lady’s decorations, with one user saying the Christmas-themed White House “looks like s***”.
Twitter users also referenced Mr Trump’s election defeat to Joe Biden, and mocked the First Lady.
One said: “This should distract people while you pack up the White House flatware and start listing it on eBay.
Another added: “The worst Christmas designs ever. Worry about packing.
“Get your belongings ready to be moved.”

But other Twitter users praised the First Lady in spite of the festive backlash, and hailed the new decorations.
One user said: “Once again you knocked it out of the park Melania. It’s absolutely gorgeous, I can’t wait to read the childish vitriol from the left.”
Another added: “You deserve to be on the cover of every magazine around the world not just because you’re beautiful but because you deserve it!”
One more user said: “She is such a beautiful woman. Never given the credit she is deserving of.”
Mrs Trump previously drew outrage over leaked comments she made to a former aide about having to set up the “f****** Christmas” decorations each year.
Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, former advisor to the First Lady, secretly recorded Mrs Trump raging about the annual decorations and being criticised for Mr Trump’s immigration policy.
Mrs Trump said: “I’m working … my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a f****** about the Christmas stuff and decorations? But I need to do it, right?”
“OK, and then I do it and I say that I’m working on Christmas and planning for the Christmas and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children that they were separated?’ Give me a f****** break.”
