Meghan Markle has described she felt like an "ugly duckling" growing up and that she was "a bit of a loner" at school.
The Duchess of Sussex revealed her school life to actress Mindy Kaling in her latest episode of podcast, Archetypes, and said she had been "the smart one but not the pretty one" at school.
The star of US series The Office was stunned when Meghan said she had a similar experience of feeling "ugly, overweight and othered".

She asked Meghan: "Were you not the pretty one growing up? That is news to me."
The Duchess of Sussex said: "No, God no, no. Ugly duckling.
"Maybe not conventional beauty, now maybe it might be seen as beautiful, but I had massive frizzy curly hair and a huge gap in my teeth.
"No, I was the smart one, forever and ever and ever. And then I sort of just grew up."
Meghan said she struggled to fit in at school, adding: "I never had anyone to sit with at lunch.
"I was always a little bit of a loner and really shy."
But she turned her attention to academic success as a distraction and had the plan to become the president of the multicultural club, the president of sophomore class and the president of this and French club.
"So I didn’t have to worry about what who I would sit with or what I would do, because I was always so busy," Meghan said.
Kaling expressed her shock and said: "Your life is together, you’re so beautiful. It’s nice to know that you were a lonely kid who didn’t like necessarily being that way."

Meghan also mentioned in the podcast that she "romanticised" a perfect "cookie cutter" life after her parents' divorce.
She planned her "dream wedding" at the age of 14 and said she imagined it to be at a Bel-Air hotel featuring a "swan lake" and "strapless and pouffy" dress.
