Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's secret night out with Princess Eugenie and her now-husband Jack Brooksbank led to a life-changing phone call, according to an author.
At the time of the night out in 2016, Meghan and Harry had only been dating for four months, and their relationship had not been made public.
The majority of the dates in those early days of their romance were at private restaurants or at each other's houses to avoid detection by the public.
But while they spent Halloween in Toronto — where Meghan lived at the time — their hunger for a public night out with Eugenie and her Jack saw them concoct a crafty plan.
The Duchess of Sussex told Ellen Degeneres how the two royal couples decided to head off to the party at the exclusive Soho House club in disguise, and shared: "He came to see me in Toronto and our friends and his cousin Eugenie and now her husband Jack, they came as well.
"And the four of us snuck out in Halloween costumes to just have one fun night on the town before it was out in the world that we were a couple."
Ellen replied in disbelief at the idea that they could go undetected, saying: "So you went with Harry to a Halloween party and they had no idea it was the two of you?"
A grinning Meghan confirmed it and said: "It was a post-apocalypse theme, so we had all this very bizarre costuming on, and we were able to just have one fun final night out."
Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand spilled the rest of what happened on this "perfect night out" in their unauthorised biography Finding Freedom, telling how a phone call Harry received from his aide back at Kensington Palace while they were out "wasn't good news".
They told him that news they were dating had reached the press, and that their relationship would be revealed the next day.
The Halloween party became the very last night before their secret was shared with the world — and the next day, both of their lives would be changed forever.
