Massive internet outage takes out Amazon, Playstation and ITV sparking chaos

Amazon, PlayStation, airlines, major banks, and ITV have been affected by a massive internet outage.

Gamers, shoppers and workers across the world were left livid after they could not connect to at least 48 websites on Thursday evening.

Major banks including HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds Bank, Halifax, TSB, Tesco Bank, and the Bank of Scotland have been beset by issues, the Mirror reports.

Shoppers have vented on social media over struggling to access Argos, McDonald's, John Lewis and eBay.

The Playstation Network, Call of Duty, Fifa and EA were all reported to have had issues.

Users also say ITV, Channel 4 and Sky websites are all also experiencing issues.

Websites have not been loading and and have been displaying domain name system (DNS) service errors.

Independent outage monitor website Downdetector reported a stream of complaints about websites from about 5pm on Thursday.

It listed nearly 50 sites that customers were having trouble with in London and found tens of thousands of issues with sites based in the capital.

It is believed the outage is affecting customers across the country including those using Amazon Web Services (AWS).

But an Amazon spokesman told Mail Online: "It has investigated and AWS services are all operating normally."

PlayStation users took to social media to vent their frustration, reporting receiving messages such as "PlayStation network is currently busy".

One said: "Gotta love it when the PlayStation servers are down on my day off."

  • Reddit, Amazon, Twitter and Spotify down with thousands of users affected

PlayStation have been advising users to try and use their Fix&Connect tool.

Issues with popular online banking services including HSBC, Lloyds and Barclays have also been reported.

HSBC users have reported issues with the app and internet banking.

One tweeted: "My mobile app has stopped working and the hsbc page online is down, are there problems ?? I needed to transfer money 20 minutes ago.(sic)"

A Barclays customer said: "So my Barclays app stopped working?"

Another said: "A crazy amount of websites are down including quite a few banks."

Jake Moore, a cybersecurity specialist at ESET, said: "Web pages are located all over the world so content delivery networks are placed to distribute the data evenly by reducing the physical distance between where it's actually held and the end user.

"This helps users around the world view the same high quality information and content without any lag or slow loading times."
