A horrific fire at a building in New York has left at least 31 people injured, with 26 in a critical condition.

The grim blaze started at an apartment in the Bronx and haunting photos at the scene show victims on stretchers as brave firefights use ladders to get to windows.

Initial reports say the fire started in an apartment on the third floor, although it is unclear what caused it.

It appears to be isolated to the lower floors of the 20-unit building, near Tiebout Avenue in the Tremont section of the Bronx.

The FDNY tweeted: "Approximately 200 FDNY members are operating on scene of a 5-alarm fire at 333 East 181 Street in the Bronx.

"There are currently 31 serious injuries to civilians."

New York City’s Office of Emergency Management told locals to “avoid smoke, close windows.”

Frank Dwyer, a Fire Department spokesman, said the tragedy was reported just before 11 a.m.

He added: “We have members throughout the entire building, from the first floor to the roof."

Cars have been stopped at 182St and Webster Avenue.

Bystanders at the scene have reported seeing smashed windows across the whole building, reportedly in order to open up more access in case the fire spreads.
