Man slit cat’s throat and pierced its neck with knife after it ate his weed

A bodybuilder has been jailed after he brutally murdered his cat when it ate his weed.

Aaron Nicholas Chapman, 29, threw his cat to the floor before piercing it through the neck with the knife and slitting its throat, Bodmin Magistrates’ Court heard.

Chapman first swung the poor animal around, hitting it on the ground a number of times.

Instead of taking the cat to a vet Chapman cut its throat in a “deliberate and gratuitous act” as he was enraged it had eaten his cannabis, the court heard.

Chapman, of Bodmin, pleading guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal between December 1, 2018 and January 31, 2019.

He also admitted destroying the mobile phone of a former partner, Cornwal Live reports.

Sentencing Chapman, magistrates said there was no option but to impose an immediate custodial sentence due to the horrific nature of the crime.

They described the incident as the “most horrendous, vicious, assault on his own cat”

Chapman, who runs a building company, was jailed for 18 weeks for both offences.

He was also ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £120 and £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

He was also banned from keeping animals for life.

Chapman's sentencing comes as another cruel pet owner appeared in court this week after strangling his cat to death and buried its body in his garden.

Michael Tognetti, 23, used a cord from his tracksuit bottoms to choke the life out of his cat called Ruby on October 12, 2019.

Birmingham Magistrates Court heard a member of the public reported Tognetti to the RSPCA, claiming that he had killed his pet and buried her body in the garden of his home.

Officers from the animal charity attended the address on Main Street, Wolston, and found fresh soil in his garden with a spade lying next to it.

Animal rescuer Helen Smith took the spade and dug into the spot and found a shallow grave with the body of the tortoiseshell cat in it.

In a confession, Tognetti admitted he had killed Ruby, using a cord from his jogging bottoms to kill the animal, claiming it took just 30 seconds.

He said he had decided to take the animal’s life because she was elderly and felt as though she should be put out of her misery.

Tognetti pleaded guilty to a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a cat and was banned from keeping animals for life.

He was also handed a community service order for 24 months and was ordered to pay £300 costs and £90 victim surcharge.

The 23-year-old's other cat, a male called Oscar, was signed into RSPCA care and has since been re-homed.
