Lakewood police shoot man who opened fire from balcony on officers.

Lakewood police shot a man Thursday morning when he fired shots at officers from an apartment balcony, police said.

The incident started at about 2:30 a.m. when officers responded to a menacing report at 10555 W. Jewell Ave., Waterfront Apartments, according to a news release. A man there told police that another man had thrown rocks at his front door. The victim went outside his apartment and saw that the man throwing rocks was armed with a gun. The victim went back inside and called police.

The suspect barricaded himself inside his apartment, the release said. At one point, officers made contact but the suspect was armed when he opened his door so officers backed off. The SWAT team was called in along with a negotiator.

At about 6 a.m. the suspect walked out onto his balcony and opened fire on officers, police said. Police returned fire and the man was hit. He was taken to a local hospital. Further details on his condition were not released Thursday morning.
