King Charles expresses love for Sussexes as he names William Prince of Wales

King Charles III addressed the nation today following the tragic death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The newly-appointed King even took the time to "express his love for Harry and Meghan" as he made his inaugural speech since taking to the throne, surprising a number of spectators.

In a pre-recorded speech shown on every major TV channel, the newly-appointed King spoke about Her Majesty's passing and his long-awaited reign.

The former Prince of Wales returned to London today with Queen Consort Camilla after spending the night at Balmoral Palace, where the Queen sadly died yesterday afternoon (September 8).

In his speech he said: "Throughout her life, Her Majesty The Queen – my beloved Mother – was an inspiration and example to me and to all my family, and we owe her the most heartfelt debt any family can owe to their mother."

Charles then spoke of the Queen's famous promise made at 25 to dedicate her life to the service of her country.

"That promise of lifelong service I renew today," he said.

Continuing his speech, the King admitted: "My life will, of course, change", before expressing his sorrow at having less time to dedicate to the charitable causes he has committed his time to prior to ascending the throne.

He also took the time to acknowledge Prince William and Kate Middleton as Prince and Princess of Wales, among the many other titles they inherited upon the passing of the Queen.

"Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty," he said of his eldest son.

And in a surprising turn, he even extended his love to his estranged son Harry and wife Meghan, who stepped down as royals in 2020.

"I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas," he added.

"To my darling mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear Papa, I want to say this: thank you," he added.

Quoting Shakespeare's Hamlet, he touchingly ended his speech: "May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

This is not the first time the King has spoken publicly since his mother's death.

Yesterday he issued a touching statement, saying: "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.

"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world."

Tomorrow morning, an Accession Council officially declaring Charles as King will take place at St James’s Palace in London.
