Kate Middleton took to the red carpet at an award ceremony wearing a "revenge choker" once donned by Princess Diana, despite it reportedly irking The Queen.

The Princess of Wales appeared at the 2022 Earthshot Prize awards ceremony on Friday, December 2, wearing a rented dress from the brand Solace London, and the famous choker.

The choker, believed to be worth over £12.2 million, adorned Diana's neck at a Tate Modern gala dinner in July 1997.

But it was when she wore it on her head that "irritated" The Queen, according to royal experts.

Kate wore the necklace in Boston, Massachusetts last night, with commentator referring to it as a "revenge choker" given its appearance following the release of the trailer for Harry and Meghan's new Netflix documentary.

“When the stakes were high for The Princesses of Wales, Diana deployed a Revenge Dress. Catherine, The Princess of Wales has presented us: The Revenge Choker!” one person tweeted.

“#revengechoker from the beautiful #PrincessofWales,” said someone else.

In 1985, during she and Charles' tour of Australia, Diana was in a rush to get ready for a gala dinner in Melbourne when she struggled to pull the piece over her head.

She was then reportedly convinced by Canadian diplomat Victor Chapman to wear it as a headpiece.

“It was a piece that the Queen was very fond of, but which she, in turn, decided to pass on to Diana as a wedding gift,” royal commentator Debora Attanasio told Express.

“According to sources close to the Queen, having seen what Diana had done with it, Her Majesty became very irritated."

The choker was given to Diana by the Queen when she joined the royal family, after the Queen inherited it from her grandmother Queen Mary.

Diamond expert Maxwell Stone told Express.co.uk: "Princess Diana’s Art Deco diamond and emerald choker was a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth II, however, Princess Diana had other ideas for the necklace, and no doubt shocked the Royal Family when she wore it on her head.

"Whilst designed to be worn as a necklace, the trend-setting Princess premiered her new look at a charity event in Melbourne in 1985 and again in 1988 at another Australian event."

He added that the clasped necklace wouldn't go over her nose, and instead of waiting for someone to undo it and fix it again, she proceeded with the necklace as a headband.

In her book, The Royals, royal biographer Kitty Kelley wrote that Diana had said “my honker’s too big".

Victor Chapman then reportedly responded: “Leave it there. It’s young and fun, like you."
