Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has been urged to step back into the wrestling ring – by one of his biggest WWE rivals in John Cena.
Cena himself has recently been back in WWE, ending a spell of almost two years without a regular match with a triumphant return to challenge Roman Reigns.
Those two rivals look set to lock horns for Reigns’ Universal Championship at Summerslam next month – though that’s yet to be officially confirmed.
In the meantime, Cena has been getting himself back into ring shape with some outings after televised shows and as part of WWE’s recent return to live touring.
It follows a spine-tingling comeback for the multi-time former world champion at the recent Money in the Bank pay-per-view.
The 44-year-old was given a thunderous reception in Texas as he appeared in order to lay down his challenge to Reigns.
Now, with his return locked in, eyes are starting to shift across Hollywood to Cena’s wrestling turned silver screen colleague in Dwayne Johnson.
Johnson of course found worldwide fame in Vince McMahon’s company before going onto become one of the world’s biggest film and television stars.
While there’s no news on a confirmed return to WWE for The Rock, there have been rumours in recent months that he, too, will collide with Reigns in future.
A report from Andrew Zarian of the Mat of Men podcast noted earlier this month that the People’s Champ ‘is expected’ to be back in time for November’s Survivor Series, where he could begin building a feud with Reigns that ends in a dream match at next year’s WrestleMania.
Johnson himself played down talk of WWE when recently asked if there was anything he could ‘tease’, replying: “There’s nothing,” before deftly changing the subject and joking about forming a tag team with Emily Blunt, his Jungle Cruise co-star.
Cena was one of Rock’s biggest rivals in WWE, the two squaring off in consecutive Wrestlemania blockbusters in 2012 and 2013.
He has weighed in on a potential comeback for the Miami native, telling Entertainment Tonight: "For him to be gracious enough to return to WWE, its own global entertainment phenomenon, it's great for WWE and I think it's great for The Rock.
“As a fan of WWE, I hope he returns."
Rock’s last WWE match was a six-second defeat of Erik Rowan in 2016.
