‘Incredible’ dad, 35, fell into coma and died after Xmas morning heavy drinking

A dad died after drinking so much alcohol on Christmas morning he passed out and stopped breathing, an inquest has heard.

Sean Brookes, 35, suffered a cardiac arrest which caused his brain to shut down on December 25, 2020.

The popular plumber was taken to hospital where he died six days later on New Year's Eve, StokeonTrentLive reports.

Dad-of-one Sean from Blurton, Staffordshire, was placed into a coma until his family agreed to his life support being switched off.

His partner Emma Hodgkiss told an inquest at Stoke's Civic Centre that Sean fell asleep on the floor after cooking Christmas dinner.

She only realised later that Sean had stopped breathing, and called 999.

Emma told the inquest that Sean didn't eat his Christmas dinner as he had been drinking and fell asleep.

She said: "He was drinking in the lead up to Christmas Day. He cooked Christmas dinner for the family, but didn't eat himself as he had been drinking and fell asleep.

"We were in and out of the room. I realised he didn't appear to be breathing and called for an ambulance.

"His father commenced CPR until the paramedics arrived. He was conveyed to the Royal Stoke University Hospital where he remained in intensive care for a number of days.

"The doctor spoke to us, explained the prognosis was very poor and that he would have a very poor quality of life.

She told mourners: "Sean, thank you for 11 years of special memories. There have been some lows, but mainly highs, and we have shared some amazing times together, which I will treasure forever.

"I still expect to see your face pressed up against the window scaring me every day, or to see your van pull up outside and hear you say, 'put kettle on, kid'. It really is the little things.

"You are my best friend and to carry on without you is the hardest part. We had so much left to do together and so many memories to make with our little girl, we just thought we had forever.

"My promise to you is to give Lana the best life I can. You will live on through her. I will talk about you every day.

"I will tell her about all of the happy times we shared together and all the things you planned for us. She will know what a kind, clever, strong, thoughtful, and incredible loving man you were – and the funniest daddy you could ever have wished for.

"I will give her the biggest kiss from you every night, and when I sing You Are My Sunshine, I will be singing it from both of us.

"We will always be Emmo and Seano, and as you once sang to me that special Christmas Eve, 'I know there'd only be a second best for me, I'll never find another you'."
