Harrowing moment dog gives her life to save boy, 10, from being attacked by wolf

A hero Jack Russell has been filmed giving her life to save her 10-year-old owner from being attacked by a wolf.

The youngster, named Yemelyan, was playing hide and seek with his siblings when he decided to hide in a pile of snow.

But he failed to notice a hungry wolf emerging from the nearby forest and heading straight towards him.

His dog, Jessie, spotted the danger and charged at the predator in a tragic act of bravery that cost her life.

Footage taken from Yemelyan’s nearby family home in the Russian sub Arctic village of Sindor, in the Komi Republic, shows the youngster running into the pile of snow to hide.

Just seconds later, the huge wolf appears at the left of the screen and heads straight towards the snow pile.

Jessie then darts out of the house at such a speed she looks like a tiny grey comet charging at the wolf.

The predator turns on the pooch and Jessie lets out blood-curdling cries can be heard as the wolf attacks it.

But the moment of bravery gives Yemelyan enough time to make his escape. He jumps out of the pile of snow and runs to the safety of his home to alert his parents.

His dad Ruslan summoned his friends, who were local hunters, and rushed outside and the wolf dropped the terrier – still clenched in its mouth – and fled into the forest.

Jessie was found still alive but severely wounded and covered in blood.

She tragically died soon afterwards in the arms of Yemelyan’s mother Marina on the way to the clinic in regional capital Syktyvkar.

“I called my friends and they quickly arrived, following the wolf's trail,” he said.

“The tragedy happened at about 7pm and 20 minutes later we rescued the dog.

“The wolf dropped the dog, feeling he was being trailed.

“The dog was still alive, we brought her to the vet clinic, it is about 200 kilometres (125 miles) away, but they said they could not do anything, and just injected a painkiller.”

“We drove on to Syktyvkar, and they promised to help, but the dog died in the arms of my wife.”

The wolf is believed to have been stalking Yemelyan’s home before the attack and hunters have now secured permission to kill the wolf.

Ruslan said that wolves had attacked dogs in the village recently but locals now fear children are in peril too from the predators.
