A Google Maps user has been left spooked after coming across what looks like a "blood lake" hidden in the sandy hills of South Dakota.

The mysterious aerial shot, posted to the subreddit r/GoogleMaps, shows the a red-coloured lake nestled in the Black Hills National Forest.

User u/BlakeCakee posted the peculiar pic with the caption: "I think I found a Blood Lake in South Dakota…"

The forest, located in the west of the state and bordering neighbouring Wyoming, is a popular location with mountain climbers and campers.

But it has also been home to gold mining and timber production and one user suggested such heavy industry could be responsible for the discolouring of the lake.

User boston_nsca replied: "Ah yes, good ole environmental destruction."

Mining is a big industry in South Dakota, producing gold, cement, gravel, and sand.

The Homestake Mine at the Black Hills was the primary gold mine until it was shut down in 2001.

Several dams along the Missouri River are used to produce hydroelectric power though the state continues to rely on coal and oil-fuelled power plants.

Daily Star previously reported how a fellow Google Maps user found a "bloody puddle" in a remote field.

The patch of red in a large aerial shot of an unknown field left Reddit users baffled with one even suggesting it was a "place to sacrifice pigs the traditional way (cutting their throats)".

Other shocking images unearthed on Google Maps include little boy was spotted holding a pistol – which seems to have tugged at the heartstrings of some fans on Reddit.

The image, posted to the subreddit r/googlemapsshenanigans and which shows the child wearing a pair of shorts with no shirt or shoes, was captioned: "You came to the wrong neighbourhood…"

And Reddit users were left scratching their heads after another Google Maps detective spotted a "weird symbol" that "looks like a face" in the water off the coast of Santa Barbara, California.
