A mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Colorado has left 18 people injured with five others confirmed to have died.

Police have said that a suspect is in custody and is currently being held in a local hospital.

A spokesperson refused to confirm how serious the injuries amongst the survivors are and also said it was too early to establish a motive.

They added that the tragic number of casualties is not confirmed and could still rise.

It comes after horrifying clips online showed cops racing to the scene at Club Q in Colorado Springs with multiple ambulances on site to take victims to hospital.

Officers first received a call alerting them to the active shooter just before midnight.

The venue is an "adult-orientated gay and lesbian" club that hosts theme nights including "karaoke and drag shows".
