Ex-Fairview High School student pleads guilty in sexual assault case

A former football player at Fairview High School has pleaded guilty to a felony charge stemming from a sexual assault case, according to the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office.

The ex-student was in August found guilty of attempted unlawful sexual contact after a jury trial in Boulder County juvenile court for pinning a female student to a locker at Fairview High and groping her during the 2016-2017 school year.

The Denver Post is not naming the ex-student because he was charged in juvenile court and was a minor at the time of the incidents.

He was scheduled to go on trial again Monday on additional charges connected to a different alleged sexual assault that did not happen at school, but instead pleaded guilty to felony second-degree assault, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office, Shannon Carbone, said in an email Monday. Sentencing is set for Nov. 28.

“We want to acknowledge the courage of the victims and the work of law enforcement in making this outcome possible,” Carbone said. “With the guilty verdict at trial and this guilty plea, the court will have the opportunity to ensure that the juvenile is held responsible for his actions.”

In addition to the locker-pinning incident, the ex-football player was accused of sexually assaulting a fellow Fairview High student while he and the girl were drinking alcohol in a friend’s basement during the spring of 2017.

She did not immediately report the assault to authorities and the ex-football player was not arrested until December 2020, as Fairview High students forced a reckoning at the school over what they said was a culture tolerant of sexual violence toward women and girls.

The ex-football player is at least the third former student to publicly face sexual assault allegations over the last three years. The school district is also facing a federal civil rights lawsuit by two victims of sexual assault who say school officials failed to protect them.
