A manhunt is under way after a man allegedly pushed his wife and two daughters into a well, killing one of the girls.
Raja Yadav was reportedly angry with his wife because he wanted a son, and she had given birth to a third daughter.
The 42-year-old is alleged to have pushed his wife and two daughters into a well as they returned from visiting her parents, pelting them with stones as they tried to climb out.
According to a police report, Yadav took a detour on his way home and drove his motorbike off the road to a large well with no protective barrier.
Yadav parked up and pretended to be drawing water from the well before pushing his wife and two daughters in.
His eight-year-old daughter is now dead as a result of the horrific incident in Chhatarpur, a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
Speaking to PTI, Sub Inspector Rajendra Singh of Chandla police station said that Yadav “pushed his wife and two daughters into the well.
“The accused even threw stones at his wife as she struggled to come out of the well,” he added.
“While his eight-year-old daughter died, the woman and her three-month-old daughter were rescued by villagers who heard their cries.”

After being rescued, the woman made her way to the nearest police station, where she filed a complaint against her husband.
“His wife has told police that Yadav was angry at her for giving birth to a daughter again as he wanted a son,” Singh told reporters.
Speaking to India Today TV, SI Singh added that the man had been threatening to kill his wife and daughters for some time.
Yadav is currently being sought by police in connection with a charge of murder, and two other changes of attempted murder.
Traditional beliefs of women’s low importance have led to an epidemic of crimes against women across India – including near-daily rapes as well as the deliberate killing of girl babies.
The preference for male babies has led to a distinct gender imbalance: India only has 940 females to every 1,000 males, according to the last census in 2011.
