Britain’s worst burglar caught after falling asleep in shop he was trying to rob

Britain’s worst burglar has been nicked after napping instead of nabbing.

Dozy William Willett, 26, was found fast asleep in the building he was trying to ransack when police investigated a break-in.

A member of the public called 999 after noting a shop door had been forced open when walking past.

An officer attended and found Willett kipping on the floor.

He was with a knife and a bag of stolen goods.

A bag found outside the building in Canterbury, Kent contained stolen items including a tablet computer, a satnav and a mobile phone.

The iPad had been taken from a car in Orange Street the previous day, the mobile phone had been stolen from a vehicle in the Spring Lane area and the sat nav had been taken from a car.

Electrical items believed to have been stolen from the business earlier that night were not recovered.

Willett, of no fixed address pleaded guilty to a series of offences and was jailed for two years and four months at Canterbury Crown Court on Tuesday.

He was also sentenced for the theft of skateboarding equipment worth around £375 from a car in Whitstable in December 2018.

Officers linked him to that incident by his DNA.

Kent Police’s PC Michael Kingwell said: "Willett may have dozed off on the job but our officers weren't sluggish in collecting the evidence that has brought him to justice.

"He'll have plenty of time to rest in his prison cell and I hope Canterbury's business owners can sleep easier knowing he is inside."
