An Asda supermarket in Stoke-on-Trent has been evacuated this morning and a 100-metre police cordon put in place around the store after 'reports of a suspicious package'. Staffordshire Police were called to the Tunstall branch of Asda, , at 8.30am today.

A police spokesman said: "Officers are currently at Asda, in Tunstall, following reports of a suspicious package being found outside the store. Police were called at 8.30am.

The store has been evacuated and a 100-metre cordon is in place. Roads surrounding the store have been closed, including Scotia Road. The Explosive Ordinance Disposal team are on their way to assess the package."

Staff from the ASDA store have been safely evacuated to the nearby Jasper Square retail park.

Locals appear to be fairly relaxed about the bomb scare so far.

One, replying to Staffordshire Police's Facebook post about the incident, commented "Can you let me know when it's open, my car's in the car park ".

Another playfully added: "unexpected item in the bagging area".

However, another local pointed out: "It's Tunstall it was always going happen sooner or later let's be honest.

"Haven't there been Terrorists arrested in Tunstall before for plotting terror attacks and also wasn't the Manchester arena bombed by a person from Tunstall?"

Meanwhile, local police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with any information on the incident should call the police on 101, quoting incident number 121 of 22 September, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
