Bloke was too busy having sex with girlfriend to crash into police car

A bloke claims he is not the man police said rammed into a force vehicle because when it happened he was enjoying some X-rated activities with his girlfriend.

Ruairi Canning, a 31-year-old father-of-two, is accused of driving his Volvo straight into a police car at speed after it was placed in his way to block it speeding off, Belfast Telegraph reported.

But Mr Canning said he was busy at the time, with a police officer explaining that the defendant told officers “he was with his girlfriend having sex at the relevant time”.

Canning is charged with attempted grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving, as well as driving while disqualified and without insurance and failing to report an accident, remain at the scene of an accident and failing to stop.

Canning, from Derry, Northern Ireland, denies the charges.

A police officer told Derry Magistrates Court that officers were called on Friday night (January 13) after a concerned citizen saw a Volvo narrowly missing pedestrians and driving erratically.

The named Mr Canning and police soon sar the car parked up and approached.

“Initially they [the police sergeant and the constable] thought the driver was going to give himself up and the sergeant got out and approached the Volvo," the officer explained to the court.

"The sergeant heard the Volvo revving and he drew his baton, with the intention of striking the car windscreen. The car then reversed towards him at speed and he had to jump out of the way.

“The officer in the police car tried to block the road but the Volvo connected with the police vehicle, causing significant damage.

“The sergeant also sustained slight injuries to his neck and right arm as he had to jump out of the way of the Volvo, which, after the incident, drove off towards Whitehouse Park.”

The Police Service of Northern Ireland for Derry City and Strabane tweeted images of the aftermath, showing their wrecked vehicle.

The force said: "This is the damage caused to one of our cars after it was rammed in the city at the weekend. Two of our officers sustained arm and neck injuries. A man has been arrested in relation to this."

Canning denies being the driver of the Volvo, which is still missing. The judge deemed Canning "not a suitable candidate for bail” and remanded him in custody until February 9.
