A close ally of President Emmanuel Macron insisted Paris would continue to push for continued access to the UK’s fishing grounds as the price for a free-trade agreement. European affairs minister Clement Beaune told French radio: “We will not accept a deal at any price.” France has blocked several attempts by EU negotiator Michel Barnier to water down his demands for status quo access to Britain’s waters.
The country’s fishing industry is economically sensitive to its coastal regions.
