Sir Keir Starmer slammed Boris Johnson for his “pathetic border policy” and “amateur” governance in a spectacular attack on the Prime Minister’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The Labour leader blamed Mr Johnson for allowing the Delta (Indian) variant to spread in the UK which has forced the Government to U-turn on the June 21 Lockdown easing date in England. Sir Keir’s comments come as Brits will be forced to wait another four weeks for ‘Freedom Day’ as concerns grow amongst scientific advisors and ministers over the spread of the delta variant despite low hospitalisations due to covid.

Sir Keir said: “Isn’t there a collective frustration about this?

“Here we are, June 21st was supposed to be freedom day and why are we not going to hit it and it looks like we are not.

“The answer is because of the Government’s pathetic borders policy, absolutely pathetic!

“They didn’t introduce hotel quarantining until February of this year and then only 1% (were required to isolate).

The Labour leader added: “Then we went through this ridiculous red, amber, green when loads of countries were moved to the amber list.

“Then you get another member of the Government popping up saying I think holidays are essential!

“And then the inexplicable delay from 9th until 23rd April in putting India onto the red list with lots of people coming in.

“And then on top of all of that – mixing at Heathrow Airport of people on red lists and green lists!”

And in a furious attack, Sir Keir fired: “Pathetic! That is why we are here, the delta variant has got in because of the Government’s pathetic control of the borders!

“Why on earth did they delay in relation to putting India on the red list? Why on earth the ridiculous

“The net result of his pathetic approach is that we are going to have four weeks more of this.”

“Let’s not beat about the bush, the delta variant is why we are not going to open up on June 21.

“And that is rampant because of the pathetic border policy of the Government I’m afraid there are just too many amateur mistakes along the way.”

Boris Johnson is set to announce a four-week extension to the previous lockdown date of June 21.

The Prime Minister will address the nation at 6pm on Monday to lay out the new rules for lockdown as it is expected ‘Freedom Day’ to be pushed back to July 19.

On Saturday, a further 7,490 positive cases of covid were recorded while there were 8 deaths.
