The update will ramp up pressure on ministers to stick to June 21 for Stage 4 of Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown.

However, speaking in the Commons this afternoon the Health Secretary refused to be drawn on the date as he said it was still too early to make a decision on the final step back to normality.

“No one wants our freedoms to be restricted a single day more than necessary,” he said.

“It is still too early to make decisions on step 4.

“I am confident one day soon freedom will return.”
