Brexit: Grant Shapps says border is ‘flowing very smoothly’
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today, the Transport Secretary said the chaos seen last month while the post-Brexit transition period was still in place was due to the French closing the border over concerns about the UK strain of coronavirus and was “nothing to do with the change of paperwork”. In a warning to his French counterpart Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, Mr Shapps said he hopes France will keep its promise to keep borders open for the “smooth” running of trade flows between the two nations.

He said: “At the moment, the border is flowing and it’s flowing very smoothly.
“When I speak to the French, I will speak to my opposite number Jean-Baptiste later today, they are telling me they are very, very keen to keep that border flowing very smoothly.
“Not least because they actually sell more stuff to us than we sell to them.
“So it’s in their interest to do so. And I’ll check that message later today.
“But I’m pretty sure that the minister is going to tell me exactly the same thing that he’s always said which is that they want to keep the border open and flowing.”
