The country’s top-selling newspaper Bild admitted envy for Britain’s jab rollout after Boris Johnson revealed his roadmap out of lockdown by June 21. The tabloid blasted Mrs Merkel as it compared the UK’s vaccine figures to Germany’s numbers, which are lagging behind.
In response, many Express.co.uk readers urged Germany to follow Brexit Britain out of the EU – which has come under fire over its jab programme.
Commenting on this website, one said: “Thank you Daily Bild. But don’t envy us and our freedom – why don’t you join us.”
Another wrote: “So you envy us Germany.
“Well our vaccination success is just one (granted it’s immediate and blatantly obvious) of the many many benefits to come from our exiting the EU.
“Why not leave too and enjoy the benefits of freedom yourselves?”
A third posted: “Dear Germans. There is hope, make your exit from the EU.”
Another added: “Easy to fix, come and join us!”
A fifth said: “It starts with Bild then will spread across all EU newspapers and media outlets.
“The genie is out of the bottle. The drip is going to become a flood. Wouldn’t surprise me if a few referendums are held before the end of the year.”
One more commented: “Brexit Britain has done fantastically since we left the EU.”
Bild’s front page on Wednesday featured a Union Jack flag with the headline: “Dear British, WE ENVY YOU!”
The article added: “The British are reacting with overwhelming euphoria to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement that ALL corona restrictions will be gradually lifted by June 21.

“This means: normal life is coming back! FREEDOM!”
The newspaper praised the UK’s vaccine rollout, referring to figures from February 21.
It said: “The successful vaccination campaign makes it possible.
“Most recently, the British inoculated around 360,000 per day (Germany 140,000).
“A total of 17.7 million British people have already received at least one vaccination (Germany 3.4 million).”
Bild also hit out at Mrs Merkel over Germany’s lockdown restrictions.
The newspaper wrote: “In plain language: The Chancellery does NOT want any large openings in March.
“And this even though the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has come to encouraging findings in a new step-by-step plan paper.
“The RKI experts rate the risk of infection in primary schools and restaurants as ‘moderate’, in retail and hotels as ‘low’.
“If the Chancellery has its way, this would change little about the lockdown – for an indefinite period of time.”
More than 18 million people in the UK have now received their first coronavirus vaccine, according to the Government’s latest figures.
Some 669,000 people have also had their second dose.
