Part of a UK city with the lowest crime rate in the country is plagued by “yobs” who hang out in the “subways”.
Bristol has a reputation as a nice place to live. According to data from Crime Rate, it has the lowest crime rate of the 12 major cities in the UK, but that doesn’t mean pockets of the city aren’t without their problems.
One neighbourhood features heavily in conversations about the tougher parts of the self-standing unitary authority, which is not part of any administrative country and instead is a ceremonial county in its own right. That neighbourhood is Lawrence Hill, with a post on Reddit forum R/Bristol in 2019 asking about whether it is a nice place to live.

“The part close to the roundabout is rough, yobs hang around the subways, footpaths and the bike path,” the top comment read. Others disagreed, with one person noting: “I've lived there for 2.5 years and feel perfectly safe, it's not a wealthy part of Bristol”.
Gatherings of people around the area seemed to be a cause for concern among residents and visitors alike. One regular visitor said: “Drug users seem to congregate around that one weird pub, teenagers occasionally hang around Marsh Lane and might make a nuisance, but the green space by the flats is wholesome and well used by little squiddlies."
The challenges facing the area have been discussed by Bristol West Labour with Hibaq Jama, the councillor for the ward, saying: “Lawrence Hill has a high level of deprived areas and, according to the Bristol City Council ward profile, it has a lower than average quality of life compared to the Bristol average, a higher level of antisocial behaviour and a higher difficulty in getting by financially."
Ms Jama noted that “93% of Lawrence Hill respondents to the Quality of Life Survey think litter is a problem locally.” She added: “Overcrowding is an issue as 16.5% of Lawrence Hill residents live in overcrowded households. 65.9% of housing in Lawrence Hill is flats”.
In 2021,BristolWorldreported that one in three local residents feared crime every day.
